FRINGE STARGATE: CERN's Large Hadron Collider Successfully Circulate Beam At Record Energy Of 6.5 Teralectronvolts (TeV) - First Step Before The Accelerator Deliver Collisions At 13 TeV!

- Last night the Operations team for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) successfully circulated a beam at 6.5 teralectronvolts (TeV) - one of many steps before the accelerator will deliver collisions at four interaction points within the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb detectors.

The image below shows "LHC page 1"- the status of the accelerator between 10.45pm and 1am last night. The lines on the graph show the intensity of Beam 1 (blue) and Beam 2 (red) as the team injects the beams into the accelerator. The black line shows the energy for Beam 2, which begins to increase at around 12.35am from its injection energy of 450 GeV and ramps to 6.5 TeV (shown as 6500 gigaelectronvolts at the top left of the screen).




On Sunday proton beams circulated in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for the first time after a 2-year period of maintenance and upgrades to the machine. From the CERN Control Centre, LHC operators and systems experts kept the beams at their injection energy of 450 gigaelectronvolts (GeV), far below the target energy of 6.5 teraelectronvolts (TeV) per beam. Now the operators are testing the accelerator's subsystems and optimizing key beam parameters in preparation for increasing the beam intensity and ramping up the energy.

Only when the machine is sufficiently tuned – and the team declares "Stable Beams" with the beams in collision at the new energy of 6.5 TeV per beam – will the physics data taking begin. This work will take many weeks.

"Beams at injection energy are a useful way of checking that all is running as it should," says LHC operator Ronaldus SuykerBuyk. "For example, we use these low-intensity beams to make sure that our beam-diagnostic equipment is working properly and is well calibrated.”

The team will spend most of the time from now until collisions checking and rechecking a whole wealth of subsystems on the LHC. For example, the Machine Protection subsystem ensures that the LHC is protected from its own beams. It includes the beam dump, beam interlock system, collimators, and beam-energy tracking devices. 'Loss maps' tell the team where the beam is losing particles along the ring.

Then there's Beam Instrumentation, which includes position monitors, beam-loss monitors and synchrotron-light monitors among other devices. Not to mention the radiofrequency, vacuum, beam-optics and injection systems, which all need to be tested and double-checked over the coming weeks.

Despite the LHC's complexity, increasing the beam energy is a simple enough process: ramp up the current in the magnets and allow the radiofrequency system to increase the energy of the beams. The current in all the magnets (and hence the magnetic field seen by the beam) is carefully increased as the beam energy rises. The main dipoles provide the necessary centripetal force to bend the beams around the ring. Other magnets such as the quadrupoles have to carefully track along with the increasing dipole field.

"The machine is behaving as expected at 450 GeV," says Mike Lamont of the LHC operations team. "We are now circulating a single bunch of protons, and using it to test our many subsystems. The bunch currently contains about 5 billion protons. When the LHC is ready, we will increase this number to the nominal bunch population of about 120 billion protons per bunch, and focus on fine-tuning the machine for collisions."

For now the team is taking a softly, softly approach, planning on injecting only three bunches of protons at nominal intensity for the first collision attempts, which are expected in the coming weeks.  - CERN.



TRANSHUMANISM: "As It Was In The Days Of Noah" - Prominent Biologists And Ethicists Call For Moratorium On Human Genetic Engineering As Experiments On The Human Genome Increases!

- On April 3 2015, a group of prominent biologists and ethicists writing in Science called for a moratorium on germline gene engineering; modifications to the human genome that will be passed on to future generations. The moratorium would apply to a technology called CRISPR/Cas9, which enables the removal of undesirable genes, insertion of desirable ones, and the broad recoding of nearly any DNA sequence.

Such modifications could affect every cell in an adult human being, including germ cells, and therefore be passed down through the generations. Many organisms across the range of biological complexity have already been edited in this way to generate designer bacteria, plants and primates. There is little reason to believe the same could not be done with human eggs, sperm and embryos. Now that the technology to engineer human germlines is here, the advocates for a moratorium declared, it is time to chart a prudent path forward. They recommend four actions: a hold on clinical applications; creation of expert forums; transparent research; and a globally representative group to recommend policy approaches.

If these recommendations seem familiar, it is because this is not the first time science leaders have responded to a similar problem. In calling for a moratorium on germline modification, the group invoked a famous precedent: the 1975 meeting at Asilomar, California on recombinant DNA. Two years before that meeting, scientists declared a voluntary moratorium on experiments that they worried might endanger human health and the environment. The moratorium allowed for a period of reflection to ensure that scientific progress would proceed without putting society’s wellbeing at risk.

Asilomar is remembered as a great success because it defused public anxiety and opened up the market for biotechnology. It is frequently cited when people are uncertain about what is at stake in emerging scientific domains. Asilomar offers an easy recipe for public policy: a research moratorium followed by an expert assessment of which risks are acceptable and which warrant regulation. It is a tonic to cure public anxiety and create safe spaces for science.

But how good is the Asilomar model for governing controversial biotechnological advances? The answers are ambiguous at best. The Asilomar meeting achieved agreement in part by bracketing off three serious concerns: environmental release of engineered organisms; biosecurity; and ethical and social aspects of human genetic engineering. Decades later, these are precisely the issues we are still wrestling with in the public domain.

The molecular biologists at Asilomar sidestepped ecological concerns by prohibiting the release of genetically engineered organisms into the environment. A few years later, scientists on the US Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee unilaterally tried to end the prohibition on release of genetically modified (GM) organisms into the environment without asking for an environmental impact assessment. They judged the issues to be purely technical, to be resolved by scientific expertise alone. But history suggests their confidence was misplaced. Persistent controversy over GM crops and foods, longstanding in Europe and on the rise in the United States, indicate that legitimate public concerns about the benefits of these technologies could not simply be wished away.

Biosecurity came back to haunt us in 2012 when a Dutch researcher at Erasmus University used research funding from the US National Institutes of Health to create an H5N1 flu virus that could cause a pandemic. He sought to publish the results, raising sudden concern that this knowledge could be used as a tool of bioterrorism. Yet multiple rounds of scientific peer review had essentially failed to question whether the research itself was beneficial or appropriate.

Ethical questions, too, continue to swirl around genetic engineering and embryo research. Rumors that genes of human embryos have already been edited resurrect anxieties that the Asilomar scientists neither defused nor eliminated.

The experts calling for a moratorium on human germline editing assert that more research must be done before we can judge the ethical propriety of genetically modifying children. Besides, they argue, global publics must be educated by experts before an informed dialogue can take place. But the problem is not simply a lack of technical knowledge. The answer to how we should act does not lie in the technological details of CRISPR. It is our responsibility to decide, as parents and citizens, whether our current genetic preferences should be edited, for all time, into our children and our children’s children.

A moratorium without provisions for ongoing public deliberation narrows our understanding of risks and bypasses democracy. Regrettably, we have not yet developed the habits of deliberation that could guide research agendas before technological innovation renders neglected ethical questions immediate and urgent. Even in technologically advanced societies, we tend to defer to expert judgments about which risks are reasonable to worry about, and which are not. This is a democratic deficit. It inhibits our capacity to participate thoughtfully in imagining the futures we want and governing technological change accordingly.

An effective moratorium must be grounded in the principle that the power to modify the human genome demands serious engagement not only from scientists and ethicists but from all citizens. We need a more complex architecture for public deliberation, built on the recognition that we, as citizens, have a duty to participate in shaping our biotechnological futures, just as governments have a duty to empower us to participate in that process. Decisions such as whether or not to edit human genes should not be left to elite and invisible experts, whether in universities, ad hoc commissions, or parliamentary advisory committees. Nor should public deliberation be temporally limited by the span of a moratorium or narrowed to topics that experts deem reasonable to debate.

Education has a vital role to play in remedying the democratic deficit, but what citizens need is not simply more STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) courses. Knowing science does not teach us how to live well with its power. Our universities need to devote more resources to teaching the relationship between science, technology and society so as to produce the citizens, the concepts, and the conversations capable of guiding our common future.

Prudence demands that we marshal the full force of democracy to imagine the lives we want. Otherwise we will find ourselves governed by technologies whose implications we did not foresee and whose development we chose to neglect. - The Guardian.

Sinkhole closes County Road 109 outside Carbondale, Colorado

A sinkhole that developed in a problem area along Garfield County Road 109 over the past couple of days has the road down to one lane currently, and will force a full closure while county crews assess the situation.


According to county Road and Bridge Department officials, the new sinkhole is in an area near Aspen Glen that is known for movement and has required quite a bit of fill work over the years.

County Road 109 runs between the Thompson Creek Road (CR 108) and the Ironbridge/West Bank area north of Carbondale.

"This newest sinkhole is an exception to the usual movement, as it is larger and deeper than others," according to a statement sent out by the county Thursday afternoon. "It has gone from approximately four inches deep to five feet deep overnight."

The county has placed approximately 30 tons of material in that same location, which abuts a hillside where several outflows from irrigation dates on the mesa above flow toward the Roaring Fork River.

The road in that area is now down to a single lane, but will need to be completely closed so that the exact cause of the new sinkhole can be determined and repairs made.

"Road and Bridge will be working through the weekend to re-open the road as soon as possible," according to the county's news release. In the meantime, "It is advised that motorists avoid the area."

Alternate routes are back to Carbondale to Highway 133 and Highway 82, or the Thompson Creek Road to Dry Park Road (CR 125), and down Four Mile Road to Glenwood Springs.

Motorists are also advised to not move traffic cones and advisory signs in order to travel through the damaged area, and to strictly obey signs and closures or choose other routes until the road is fixed.  - Post Independent.

Sinkhole closes street in Michigan

A portion of Minnie Street in Port Huron Township is closed because of a sinkhole.

The street will be closed between 25th and 26th streets through Friday for repairs, according to Kirk Weston, managing director for St. Clair County Road Commission.

Weston said the sinkhole developed because of a failed storm drain.  - The Times Herald.


Sinkhole opens up in New Castle, Pennsylvania

A sinkhole big enough to swallow a tire appeared yesterday morning on the city's east side.

James Penwell of Wolfe Street made the discovery while walking home around 9:30 a.m. The hole formed inside the utility cut at the intersection of Florence and Epworth streets.

"I almost stepped into it," said Penwell, who said he didn't notice the hole being there when he walked past 45 minutes earlier.


Penwell notified police and waited at the scene, cautioning motorists who approached the area. "Sometimes cars just fly down this road," he said.

Public works responded to the call and set up a horse barricade to divert traffic around the danger zone.

Public Works Director Michael Rooney said the water company responded to fix the problem just after noon. - New Castle News.


Sinkholes continue to plague Mississippi town




A DeSoto County subdivision is dealing with a hole in the ground...again.

Local 24 News first told you about the sinkhole problem in the Ravenwood subdivision in 2013. At that time, crews filled were busy filling one measuring four feet wide and four feet deep.

Monday, a year and a half later, frustrated neighbors are dealing with another one.

Jim Stacy has a measuring stick, a sink hole next to his drive and an axe to grind.

"I'll never, every buy a home again," Stacy said. "If this falls in the ground, that will be the the best that could happen, insurance could pay for it." Stacy said.

He noticed the hole March 25th and alerted the city of Horn Lake.

While waiting for the sinkhole to be fixed, things got worse March 31st, when Stacy said a teenager fell in, and somehow didn't break a leg.

"He was walking by on his cell phone, not paying attention, and down he went," Stacy said.

In 2013, Horn Lake leaders said another sinkhole on the same street opened due to a misplaced sewer main hole. However, Horn Lake Director of Operations Spencer Shields believes Mother Nature, not engineering, caused Ravenwood's latest sinkhole.

"Between the snows and the rain, the ground is just going to compact. And as it dries out, it expands back and that causes water lines to break and sewer lines to break and storm drains to open up. So, it's weather, more weather related than anything," Shields said.


Horn Lake crews are expected to fill the sinkhole Tuesday morning. City leaders said final repairs on the larger sinkhole will be done in a couple of weeks. - Local Memphis.


Sinkhole opens beneath garbage truck in East Hampton, New York

While many drivers in East Hampton Town have been angered by the recent blight of large potholes along Montauk Highway from Napeague to the Lighthouse, that have been destroying tires and tire rims, they have nothing on the sinkhole that opened up on Montauk Main Street Monday morning.

"We were picking up the garbage," Tim Schellinger, the driver of an East Hampton Town Department of Parks and Recreation garbage truck, said as he stood on the side of the road waiting for assistance, his truck mired in an asphalt pit. He and a co-worker were emptying trashcans after a busy holiday weekend on the north side of Main Street, between Essex and South Edison Streets. They had pulled over by a pail west of Martell's Stationary.

"When I went to leave, the road caved in," Mr. Schellinger said. The entire rear left wheel went through the pavement, immobilizing the truck. The gaping hole was about two square yards.

According to Stephen Lynch, East Hampton Town's highway superintendent, a drain belonging to the state had partially collapsed beneath the weight of the truck. "Thank God nobody got hurt," he said.

The Police Department dispatched a heavy duty tow truck to the scene, which arrived about 45 minutes later. It took the crew about 20 minutes to tug the truck out of its hole. Mr. Schellinger drove the truck away, with all concerned no worse for the wear.

It was a first time experience for him, he said, "and, hopefully, the last." - The East Hampton Star.

There are a lot of people working on it. I also really thought it was very valuable to have this email exchange with… interested parties about events as they were unfolding in Japan. The accident as everyone knows was a terrible tragedy.”

Robot sent to crippled Fukushima to research reactor vessel

The operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant has sent a transforming robot to conduct an unprecedented mission inside the primary containment vessel of Reactor 1. This is the first time a robot has entered the damaged interior of the reactor.

The robot was to check the first floor of the containment vessel Friday, and will go on to explore the second half Monday.

The I-shaped device, about 9.5 centimeters high and 60 centimeters long, entered the vessel via a 10-centimeter diameter pipe, according to The Japan Times. After entering it assumed a shape similar to number 3 and was to measure temperature and radiation levels.

In October 2012, when a measuring device was put into the same vessel, the radiation peaked at 11 Sieverts per hour at most. One Sievert may cause illness if absorbed all at once, while 8 Sieverts may result in death.

The transforming robot on the reactor mission is remotely controlled from a plant building where the radiation level is currently low.

The robot will also take photos of the interior and check if there are any obstacles on the part of the first floor that leads to the underground area.

The current research will be only the first step, as TEPCO eventually wants the device to get to the underground vessel with massive amounts of melted fuel. This part of the study is to be carried out next March.

"We believe this will lead us to figuring out how to decommission the reactor," Ryo Shimizu, spokesman for plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), told NBC News.

The robot still needs some improvement, as it should be made amphibious to conduct research on the underground vessel: there is a pool with highly radioactive water there.

Robots have been used to research the situation at Fukushima before, but never went inside the containment vessel: for example, a UK device that 3D-mapped radiation sources at the plant was introduced back in January.

The Fukushima plant had meltdowns at three of its six units after a tsunami swept through the facility in March 2011. - RT.

- A blazing sinkhole in northwest China terrified locals, attracting tourists as well as researchers and prompting questions about its origin. The temperature on top of the burning crater was estimated to be 792 degrees Celsius (1,457 degrees Fahrenheit).


Due to the deadly heat, scientists have been unable to come close enough to the crater to measure how deep it really is.

Located in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, near Urumqi, in northwest China, the sinkhole is 0.9 meters (3 feet) wide.

The hole appeared recently after locals noticed the ground nearby getting warmer.

The temperature has been measured at 792C – but that was from two metres away.

Branches and grass that are held near the hole immediately catch fire from the intense heat.


It is hot enough to light up branches and other objects placed next to it. Various tourist videos show people setting things on fire.

Locals have dubbed it a “gateway to hell.” Many have told the Chinese media that the ground in the area has been hot for some time now.

There is no volcanic activity in the region, which led scientists from the Xinjiang Meitian Geological Bureau to believe that the sinkhole was created out of coal seam spontaneously combusting.

The area was reportedly used for mining in the 1970s, China Central TV cited a supervisor from Xinjiang Meitian Fire Engineering Bureau, Chen Long, as saying, the Daily Mail reported.

“Primitive mining and extinguishing techniques caused coal to burn deep under the ground,” Chen said. “Operators didn’t seal the mines properly after business discontinued and this leads the underground fire to burn towards the surface of the earth.”

Similar phenomena on a larger scale were spotted in Turkmenistan and America’s Pennsylvania.

The former, referred to as the “the door to hell,” is a gas crater that has been burning in a Turkmen desert for more than 40 years. The one in Pennsylvania is a coal mine fire that has been burning since May 1962. - RT.



PLANETARY TREMORS: Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Strikes Off Northern California Coast!

- The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 off the coast of northern California.

The USGS says the quake was centered in the Pacific Ocean, about 100 miles west of Ferndale, California, and struck at about 11:59 a.m. PDT Friday.

Ferndale is located just over 100 miles south of the Oregon state line and about 275 miles northwest of Sacramento.

- With a slew of statistics projected on the slideshow behind him, California's state climatologist had a stark warning during a Thursday presentation on the severity of the drought.

"You’re looking on numbers that are right on par with what was the Dust Bowl," said the climatologist, Michael Anderson.

The presentation was part of a briefing organized by the Assn. of California Water Agencies and attended by top state officials.

Gov. Jerry Brown has been criticized for not doing enough to curb water use by farmers, but members of his administration rejected that perception during Thursday's event.

John Laird, state secretary for natural resources, said the agricultural industry has faced an economic loss of $1.5 billion while fallowing 400,000 acres and laying off 17,000 farm workers.

"We are all in this together," Laird said.

On Wednesday, Brown met for hours with leaders from environmental groups, agricultural organizations and water agencies to discuss the state's response to the drought.

"The key challenge here, aside from getting the water, is to collaborate together and not try to blame other people and point fingers," he said. - LA Times.

- The U.S. Geological Survey says two magnitude 4.0-plus earthquakes have struck the San Andreas fault on the California-Mexico border.

The first one, a magnitude 4.2, struck at 12:30 p.m. PDT 7 miles southwest of Delta, B.C., Mexico at a depth of 16.1 miles.

The second quake, measuring in at a magnitude of 4.5, struck the same area about three minutes later, but only at a depth of .44 miles. Quakes just below the earth’s surface, in the 0 to 10 miles range, can cause even more damage at lower magnitudes.

Several people reported feeling the quakes in Mexicali, Mexico and Calexico in California.

FIRE IN THE SKY: Exploding Meteor Filmed Over Slovakia And Hungary!

Meteor burns up in the sky, creating a flash of light shortly before dusk in eastern Slovakia

- The spectacular moment a meteor plummets towards a city in Slovakia before dissolving in a flash of light has been captured on camera.

The 'out-of-this-world' action was spotted by hundreds of worried people in the eastern part of Slovakia shortly before dusk on April 6 - who feared the asteroid would crash into their homes.

Lasting only a few seconds, the clip shows the meteor racing rapidly towards earth.

A split second later there is a flash of a fireball, before the bright yellow light quickly disintegrates and disappears.

It was filmed and uploaded to YouTube by a user called NikoLas Vegas, who said he was initially concerned the object would have crash-landed onto earth when he saw it at 7.34pm local time.





He told a Slovak news website: 'I was driving my car when I spotted something amazing up in the sky. I don't know what it was but I posted a video of it online to share it with others.'

He added: 'I was a bit worried that some of it had actually landed on the airport in Kosice but I was told later that it had disintegrated before it hit the ground.'

Slovak astronomer Jan Svoren said that it was a meteor of the type known as a bolide.

They are characterised as burning extremely bright, often seconds before exploding in the atmosphere — at the same time as creating an even brighter fireball.

One video of the meteor was taken from a car in the Hungarian town of Rakospalota, and another in a second car in the Slovak city of Kosice on April 6.

Five years ago, parts of a meteor were found in the same location near the city of Kosice.

Amateur astrologers and collectors managed to recover 64 fragments, of which the biggest one weighed over four pounds. - Daily Mail.




INFRASTRUCTURE COLLAPSE: Deadly Bus Crash In Morocco - Many Children Among 31 Dead In Collision!

The bus was completely destroyed in the fire that followed the collision.

- Schoolchildren returning from a sports competition were among at least 31 people killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in southern Morocco, officials say.

The bus burst into flames after the crash on Friday morning near the city of Tan-Tan in the district of Chbika.

Nine people were injured and taken to hospital.




Local media said the children had been taking part in an athletics competition and were travelling with their coaches.

Some reports said they were travelling from the capital, Rabat, to Laayoune, which is in the Western Sahara.

"A majority of the victims are children aged eight to 14," an official from the regional sports and youth ministry told the AFP news agency.

Hassan Issengar, a well-known athlete, was travelling with the children and is among the dead, reports said.

Road accidents have been on the rise in Morocco as car ownership has nearly doubled over the past 15 years, according to Reuters news agency.

An average of 10 people are estimated to die every day in road accidents. - BBC.



GEOLOGICAL UPHEAVAL: Massive Landslide In Phakant, Myanmar - 70 People Reported Missing!

- Some 70 people were reported missing following a landslide in a jade mining area in Phakant in Myanmar's northern Kachin state, media said on Thursday.

The bank of a 15.25-metre-high jade mining burrow of Myayamone Co. Ltd. near Lonekhin village in Phakant collapsed on Wednesday.

Along with the victims, 30 heavy digging machines were also buried at the spot, according to Xinhua news agency.

The victims, who were living in makeshift huts near the jade mining area, are mostly miners or peddlers.

Hundreds of companies are involved in jade mining work in the area.

A similar landslide occurred in the same township at the end of March, killing nine people. - IANSLive.



RATTLE & HUM: Mysterious Explosion "Shook The Night" For Residents Of Sioux Falls, South Dakota?!


April 10, 2015 - SOUTH DAKOTA, UNITED STATES
- A loud boom shook the night for a number of people in Sioux Falls - and authorities are at a loss for what might have caused it.

According to police, a "loud sound of explosion" was heard Friday morning at 12:27 a.m. Police received 17 calls of a loud noise that caused houses to shake.

Numerous officers around the city also reported hearing the sound.

While the noise appears to have focused in the western part of town, KSFY News has received reports of the sound being heard in both central and eastern areas, as well.

A majority of the calls came from the area of 9th Street and Valley View Road, police say.

The Sioux Falls Police Department and the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to the area but were not able to locate the source of the sound at this time.

It is still unclear whether the noise actually centered in that area.

KSFY News has reached out to a number of authorities, including police, the Air National Guard, and the National Weather Service - none of whom were able to come up with any answers as to what could have caused the noise.

INFRASTRUCTURE COLLAPSE: Plane Crashes In Zambia - All People On Board Killed!

- A seven-seater fixed-wing South African-registered plane yesterday crashed in Mazabuka, killing all people on board.

Southern Province commissioner of police Mary Chikwanda said in an interview yesterday that the plane crashed around 13:00 hours at Ekushiya Farm belonging to commercial farmer Guy Robinson.

“We have only discovered one body at the scene of the accident. The body had no legs or hands and it was badly burnt.

“The plane has a South African flag but the registration number is not clear because I could only see the letters SH,” Ms Chikwanda said.

She said the plane was destined for Livingstone from Ndola en route to South Africa.

She said police suspect that the pilot was conducting an aerial mapping of the area before the plane crashed.

Ms Chikwanda said police are yet to establish the number of people on board the aircraft and their nationalities but she believes that they were all South Africans.

“We will have full details of the plane crash soon. Zambia Air Force officers went to the scene of the accident to carry out investigations and hopefully we will have all the nec-essary information,” Ms Chikwanda said.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Panji Kaunda expressed shock at the crash.

Col Kaunda rushed to the crash site in the company of senior government officials.
