FIRE IN THE SKY: Newfound Asteroid 2013 RZ53 To Whiz Between The Earth And The Moon This Week!

September 15, 2013 - SPACE - Discovered just two days ago, a small asteroid will be whizzing past the Earth on Wednesday night, coming within two-thirds the distance to the Moon.




Asteroid 2013 RZ53 was found early Friday morning by astronomers working at the Steward Observatory, at the University of Arizona, as part of the Catalina Sky Survey.

Astronomers from Australia and Illinois helped to track the asteroid, and found that it's about 3 metres wide, its orbit is very close to Earth's, and it even flies along with us as we make our way around the Sun.

On Wednesday night, 2013 RZ53 will come within 0.6 lunar distances of Earth, or roughly 230,000 kilometres.

2013 RZ53 is an Apollo asteroid. These are a specific type of asteroids that cross Earth's orbit, putting them into a class of 'potentially-dangerous asteroids'.

Astronomically speaking, it's coming pretty close to us, but it's well outside the orbit of our satellites, and there's no chance of it hitting the Earth. Still, based on the astronomers backtracking the orbit of this space rock, that's apparently the closest approach it's made since March of 1954.

This particular Apollo asteroid won't likely get back this close to us until March 2073. It'll probably just make another close fly by, but even if it managed to get close enough to actually hit us, it's doubtful that it would cause much more than a brief light show.

For comparison, the asteroid that entered the atmosphere over Russia back in February is estimated at being over five times the size of 2013 RZ53, and that size is what helped it survive to get so close to the ground.

What's particularly remarkable about the discovery of 2013 RZ53 is its small size. Astronomers (both professional and amateur) have discovered a lot of asteroids so far, but the smaller an asteroid is, the harder it is to spot. Sometimes we only see asteroids this small until after they've passed us by.

From crippling cyber-attacks by terrorists using the internet to cause havoc, to the release of engineered diseases and killer computers, they warn the future is far from rosy.

But the work being done by the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) should one day help the world sleep a little easier at night.

Once the threats have been identified, the group intend to devise ways of 'ensuring our own species has a long-term future'.

Although nuclear annihilation and a giant asteroid obliterating the planet remain distinct, if unlikely possibilities, Lord Rees now believes 'the main threats to sustained human existence now come from people, not from nature.'

Other scenarios being considered by the 27-strong group, which also involves academics from Oxford, Imperial, Harvard and Berkeley, include extreme weather events, fast spreading pandemics, and war or sabotage resulting in a shortage of food and resources.

Speaking last night at the British Science Festival at the University of Newcastle, Lord Rees said: 'In future decades, events with low probability but catastrophic consequences may loom high on the political agenda.

 'That's why some of us in Cambridge - both natural and social scientists - plan, with colleagues at Oxford and elsewhere, to inaugurate a research programme to compile a more complete register of these existential risks, and to assess how to enhance resilience against the more credible ones.'

He added: 'The response we've had to our proposal has been remarkably wide and remarkably positive.

'The project is still embryonic but we are seeking funds via various sources and have strengthened our international advisory network.'

The other two co-founders of CSER are Jann Tallinn, one of the people behind internet phone service Skype, and Cambridge philosopher Professor Huw Price.

The group's manifesto is clear: 'Many scientists are concerned that developments in human technology may soon pose new, extinction-level risks to our species as a whole.

'Our goal is to steer a small fraction of Cambridge's great intellectual resources and of the reputation built on its past and present scientific pre-eminence, to the task of ensuring that our own species has a long-term future.

 'In the process, we hope to make it a little more certain that we humans will be around to celebrate the University's own millennium, now less than two centuries hence.'

Cambridge statistician Professor David Spiegelhalter, who is also part of CSER, said: 'Asteroids crashing on earth are an existential threat, but there is not really a lot we can do about preventing such an event.

'The ones that we are not so well aware of are the technological threats.

Our reliance on technology leaves us vulnerable to it. We use interconnected systems for everything from power, to food supply and banking, which means there can be real trouble if things go wrong or they are sabotaged.

'In a modern, efficient world, we no longer stockpile food. If the supply is disrupted for any reason, it would take about 48-hours before it runs out and riots begin. So on a practical level, individuals should keep some non-perishable items at home.

'Energy security is also an issue, as we import much of our fuel from abroad, so a conflict over resources in the future is possible.'

MASS FISH DIE-OFF: Hundreds Of Dead Fish Found In Marsascala, Malta!

September 15, 2013 - MALTA - Hundreds of fish found dead at il-Maghluq in Marsascala died from lack of oxygen, the Fisheries Department reported today.




The revelation comes after environment NGO Nature Trust reported it was investigating reports of mass death of fish seen floating at il-Maghluq.

The Fisheries Department said the fish were sea bream and sea bass and cleaners were deployed to clean the area, collecting over six large bags of fish.

According to Nature Trust, the species was not usually found at il-Maghluq. "Our concern is for the rare and protected species, the killifish, which can be found in this salt marsh," the NGO said.

It said it was working with the Local Council, MEPA and the voluntary group Friends of Marsaskala to clean up the area from all the rubbish accumulated during the years as a short term conservation measure till MEPA approved the management plan for this site.

Il-Maghluq is one of the rarest habitat found across the Maltese Islands and is currently undergoing a management plan under the Natura2000 network.

"The incident of the dead fish is another atrocious incident which took place this year, the previous one being the killing of the ducks," Nature Trust said.

The NGO received information that someone had dumped the fish there in the early hours of this morning. The NGO urged the public to keep il-Maghluq clean and report any illegal activity to the police.

“It's unlikely at this point that we'll be able to reach those who are stranded in the hard-to-reach areas,” said Kim Kobel, a spokesperson for the Office of Emergency Management in Boulder, Colorado.

Authorities have said that fixing 100-150 miles of roadway and 20-30 bridges in Boulder County alone would cost an estimated $150 million.

September 15, 2013 - RUSSIA - A team of Russian scientists has found the remains of 10 gray whales washed ashore in Russia’s most northeasterly region Chukotka, the Marine Mammal Council said Friday.

The remains were discovered during an aerial survey of Chukotka’s Arctic coast between September 1 and 8.

Stanislav Belikov, head of marine wildlife conservation at the All-Russian Research Institute for Nature Protection, said the 10 marine mammals had washed up on the 800-kilometer (500-mile) stretch of the coast.

"This is quite a few, especially considering that six of these whales were washed ashore within a coastal area of 120 kilometers. They were possibly wounded by hunters or attacked by killer whales.

We also shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a disease. In any case, reasons for this incident should be investigated,” Belikov said.

September 15, 2013 - UNITED STATES - A plume of hot material rising from deep within the earth scarred the underside of the North American tectonic plate as it drifted westward millions of years ago, suggests research published today in Nature Geoscience. The residual heat still affects seismic waves travelling through the continent, even though the mantle plume is now under the Atlantic Ocean.




When such mantle plumes occur beneath thin oceanic crust, they often punch through and create volcanoes — the Hawaiian Islands are a prime example. But older, colder and thicker continental crust is not so easily breached, says Risheng Chu, a geophysicist at the Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics in Wuhan, China. The only signs on land of ancient hotspot paths typically are kimberlites — volcanic and sometimes diamond-bearing rocks that mark the site of an ancient, deep-seated eruption.

But Chu and his colleagues inferred the path of a hotspot beneath eastern North America using a different sort of evidence — the speed of seismic waves, which travel more slowly in warmer rock. The data were gathered by dozens of seismometers in the USArray network, most of them along a stretch from Louisiana to Wisconsin, during the magnitude-5.6 quake that jolted central Virginia on 23 August 2011.

Their analysis indicates that seismic waves travelling west from the earthquake’s source in Virginia towards Missouri arrived at seismometers later and with lower intensity than expected. Such vibration-damping behaviour suggests the presence of a broad lane of warm rocks running east to west, about 200 kilometres beneath Kentucky — a depth that roughly coincides with the lower surface of the tectonic plate. Seismic waves travelling north and south of this lane arrived on time or slightly ahead of schedule.

Seismometers northeast of the Virginia quake’s epicentre also detected slow, stifled seismic waves, suggesting another hotspot track in that direction as well. The researchers suggest that the continent moving over the hotspot cut a path that swooped east-southeast from central Missouri (90 million years ago) to eastern Kentucky (some 70 million years ago), arced northeastward to Massachusetts (60 million to 50 million years ago) and then swerved eastward and moved offshore. A kimberlite deposit in eastern Kentucky, dated to about 75 million years ago, bolsters the notion that a hotspot lay below the region during that time, Chu and his colleagues contend.

The evidence supporting the purported hotspot’s path is interesting but circumstantial, says Randel Cox, a geologist at the University of Memphis in Tennessee. “I’m still trying to keep an open mind about this [idea], but there are alternate explanations” for the seismic slowdown beneath Kentucky and the Virginia–Massachusetts corridor, he notes.

For instance, seismic vibrations in the region could be scattered by features deep within or below Earth’s crust, such as a ‘crumple zone’ of rocks where one tectonic plate collided with another. Regardless, he adds, researchers need more data, from more than one earthquake, to produce a thorough subterranean map of the eastern United States. - Nature.

Mr Stores says the early start to the fire season hasn't caught firefighters by surprise.

"We've been watching the weather pretty closely and most people on the land have seen it drying out very, very quickly," he says.

Catherine White from the Mount Isa Rural Fire Brigade says conditions in north west Queensland are ideal for bushfires.

It is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements. The Ring of Fire has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes. It is sometimes called the circum-Pacific belt or the circum-Pacific seismic belt.

Tectonic Summary - Seismotectonics of Alaska.
The Aleutian arc extends approximately 3,000 km from the Gulf of Alaska in the east to the Kamchatka Peninsula in the west. It marks the region where the Pacific plate subducts into the mantle beneath the North America plate. This subduction is responsible for the generation of the Aleutian Islands and the deep offshore Aleutian Trench.

The curvature of the arc results in a westward transition of relative plate motion from trench-normal (i.e., compressional) in the east to trench-parallel (i.e., translational) in the west, accompanied by westward variations in seismic activity, volcanism, and overriding plate composition. The Aleutian arc is generally divided into three regions: the western, central, and eastern Aleutians. Relative to a fixed North America plate, the Pacific plate is moving northwest at a rate that increases from roughly 60 mm/yr at the arc's eastern edge to 76 mm/yr near its western terminus. The eastern Aleutian arc extends from the Alaskan Peninsula in the east to the Fox Islands in the west. Motion along this section of the arc is characterized by arc-perpendicular convergence and Pacific plate subduction beneath thick continental lithosphere. This region exhibits intense volcanic activity and has a history of megathrust earthquakes.

The central Aleutian arc extends from the Andreanof Islands in the east to the Rat Islands in the west. Here, motion is characterized by westward-increasing oblique convergence and Pacific plate subduction beneath thin oceanic lithosphere. Along this portion of the arc, the Wadati-Benioff zone is well defined to depths of approximately 200 km. Despite the obliquity of convergence, active volcanism and megathrust earthquakes are also present along this margin.

The western Aleutians, stretching from the western end of the Rat Islands in the east to the Commander Islands, Russia, in the west, is tectonically different from the central and eastern portions of the arc. The increasing component of transform motion between the Pacific and North America plates is evidenced by diminishing active volcanism; the last active volcano is located on Buldir Island, in the far western portion of the Rat Island chain. Additionally, this portion of the subduction zone has not hosted large earthquakes or megathrust events in recorded history. Instead, the largest earthquakes in this region are generally shallow, predominantly strike-slip events with magnitudes between M5-6. Deeper earthquakes do occur, albeit rather scarcely and with small magnitudes (Magnitude less than 4), down to approximately 50 km.

Most of the seismicity along the Aleutian arc results from thrust faulting that occurs along the interface between the Pacific and North America plates, extending from near the base of the trench to depths of 40 to 60 km. Slip along this interface is responsible for generating devastating earthquakes. Deformation also occurs within the subducting slab in the form of intermediate-depth earthquakes that can reach depths of 250 km. Normal faulting events occur in the outer rise region of the Aleutian arc resulting from the bending of the oceanic Pacific plate as it enters the Aleutian trench. Additionally, deformation of the overriding North America plate generates shallow crustal earthquakes.

The Aleutian arc is a seismically active region, evidenced by the many moderate to large earthquakes occurring each year. Since 1900, this region has hosted twelve large earthquakes (Magnitude greater than 7.5) including the May 7, 1986 M8.0 Andreanof Islands, the June 10, 1996 M7.9 Andreanof Islands, and the November 17, 2003 M7.8 Rat Islands earthquakes. Six of these great earthquakes (M8.3 or larger) have occurred along the Aleutian arc that together have ruptured almost the entire shallow megathrust contact. The first of these major earthquakes occurred on August 17, 1906 near the island of Amchitka (M8.3) in the western Aleutian arc. However, unlike the other megathrust earthquakes along the arc, this event is thought to have been an intraplate event occurring in the shallow slab beneath the subduction zone interface.

The first megathrust event along the arc during the 20th century was the November 10, 1938 M8.6 Shumagin Island earthquake. This event ruptured an approximately 300 km long stretch of the arc from the southern end of Kodiak Island to the northern end of the Shumagin Islands and generated a small tsunami that was recorded as far south as Hawaii.

The April 1, 1946 M8.6 Unimak Island earthquake, located in the central Aleutian arc, was characterized by slow rupture followed by a devastating Pacific-wide tsunami that was observed as far south as the shores of Antarctica. Although damage from earthquake shaking was not severe locally, tsunami run-up heights were recorded as high as 42 m on Unimak Island and tsunami waves in Hilo, Hawaii also resulted in casualties. The slow rupture of this event has made it difficult to constrain the focal mechanism and depth of the earthquake, though it is thought to have been an interplate thrust earthquake.

The next megathrust earthquake occurred along the central portion of the Aleutian arc near the Andreanof Islands on March 9, 1957, with a magnitude of M8.6. The rupture length of this event was approximately 1200 km, making it the longest observed aftershock zone of all the historic Aleutian arc events. Although only limited seismic data from this event are still available, significant damage and tsunamis were observed on the islands of Adak and Unimak with tsunami heights of approximately 13 m.

The easternmost megathrust earthquake was the March 28, 1964 M9.2 Prince William Sound earthquake, currently the second largest recorded earthquake in the world. The event had a rupture length of roughly 700 km extending from Prince William Sound in the northeast to the southern end of Kodiak Island in the southwest. Extensive damage was recorded in Kenai, Moose Pass, and Kodiak but significant shaking was felt over a large region of Alaska, parts of western Yukon Territory, and British Columbia, Canada. Property damage was the largest in Anchorage, as a result of both the main shock shaking and the ensuing landslides. This megathrust earthquake also triggered a devastating tsunami that caused damage along the Gulf of Alaska, the West Coast of the United States, and in Hawaii.

The westernmost Aleutians megathrust earthquake followed a year later on February 4, 1965. This M8.7 Rat Islands earthquake was characterized by roughly 600 km of rupture. Although this event is quite large, damage was low owing to the region's remote and sparsely inhabited location. A relatively small tsunami was recorded throughout the Pacific Ocean with run-up heights up to 10.7 m on Shemya Island and flooding on Amchitka Island.

Although the Aleutian arc is highly active, seismicity is rather discontinuous, with two regions that have not experienced a large (Magnitude greater than 8.0) earthquake in the past century: the Commander Islands in the western Aleutians and the Shumagin Islands in the east. Due to the dominantly transform motion along the western arc, there is potential that the Commander Islands will rupture in a moderate to large strike-slip earthquake in the future. The Shumagin Islands region may also have high potential for hosting a large rupture in the future, though it has been suggested that little strain is being accumulated along this section of the subduction zone, and thus associated hazards may be reduced.

East of the Aleutian arc along the Gulf of Alaska, crustal earthquakes occur as a result transmitted deformation and stress associated with the northwestward convergence of the Pacific plate that collides a block of oceanic and continental material into the North America plate. In 2002, the Denali Fault ruptured in a sequence of earthquakes that commenced with the October 23 M6.7 Nenana Mountain right-lateral strike-slip earthquake and culminated with the November 3, M7.9 Denali earthquake which started as a thrust earthquake along a then unrecognized fault and continued with a larger right-lateral strike-slip event along the Denali and Totschunda Faults. - USGS.

- Shifting cosmic winds suggest that our solar system lives in a surprisingly complex and dynamic part of the Milky Way galaxy, a new study reports.

Scientists examining four decades' worth of data have discovered that the interstellar gas breezing through the solar system has shifted in direction by 6 degrees, a finding that could affect how we view not only the entire galaxy but the sun itself.

"The shift in the wind is evidence that the sun lives in an evolving galactic environment," study lead author Priscilla Frisch of the University of Chicago told SPACE.com via email.

The winds of change
Charged particles stream off the sun to form a huge invisible shellaround the solar system called the heliosphere. Outside of this shell lies the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC), a haze of hydrogen and helium approximately 30 light-years across.

The LIC is wispy, featuring just 0.016 atoms per cubic inch on average. LIC gas tends to be blocked by the heliosphere, but a thin stream makes it past the sun's magnetic field at the rate of 0.0009 atoms per cubic inch (0.015 atoms per cubic cm), researchers said.

"Right now, the sun is moving through an interstellar cloud at a relative velocity of 52,000 miles per hour," Frisch said. "This motion allows neutral atoms from the cloud to flow through the heliosphere — the solar wind bubble — and create an interstellar 'wind.'"

In 2012, three papers citing measurements by NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) spacecraft showed that the wind has changed slightly over the past decade.

Frisch and her team were intrigued, and they began to wonder just how far back the difference extended. Studying data gathered by a number of spacecraft — IBEX, the joint European Space Agency/NASA Ulysses probe and several craft from the 1970s, including NASA's Mariner 10 and the Soviet research satellite Prognoz 6 — the team found that, over the course of 40 years, the wind had shifted by 6 degrees.

What's causing this change in direction? According to Frisch, it may be related to turbulence in the interstellar cloud around the solar system.

"Winds on Earth are turbulent, and other data show that interstellar clouds are also turbulent," she said. "We find that the 6-degree change is comparable to the turbulent velocity of the surrounding cloud on [the] outside of the heliosphere."

Wide-reaching effects
Interstellar winds stream in from the direction of the constellation Scorpius, almost perpendicular to the sun's path through the galaxy. As the winds interact with the sun, they create a distinctive feature.

"Helium is gravitationally focused to create a trail of helium known as the 'focusing cone' behind the sun as it moves through space," Frisch said.

The dense cone makes the particles easier to study as they pack in behind Earth's star.

The changing wind could have implications that go beyond understanding the region surrounding the solar system. It could also affect studies of the charged particles streaming off the sun.

"When we try to understand the past and present heliosphere, we can no longer assume that the heliosphere changes only because of the solar wind," Frisch said. "Now we have evidence that changes in the interstellar wind may be important."

MONUMENTAL EARTH CHANGES: THE GREAT COLORADO DELUGE Is Described As An EPIC EVENT, A ONCE IN 1,000 YEARS Situation - Rescue Efforts Ongoing For Hundreds Of People Still Unaccounted For; Town Of Milliken Becomes An Island; Death Toll Rises To 5!

September 15, 2013 - UNITED STATES - A 60-year-old Cedar Cove woman was believed to be the fifth person killed in this week's historic flooding in northern Colorado as authorities scrambled Saturday to reach hundreds of people listed as unaccounted for.

Rivers continued to flow well above flood stage, prompting orders for mandatory evacuations on both banks of the South Platte River in eastern Morgan County, including the towns of Orchard, Goodrich, Weldona and Muir Springs. Thousands living in the flood zones were displaced.

The South Platte was nearly nine feet over flood stage at Kersey Saturday morning.

"It is no doubt an epic event," said Weld county commissioner Sean Conway. "It is a once in 500 years or 1,000 years situation."

Heavy rains and hail also prompted warnings and flooded streets in parts of Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and Douglas counties.

Throughout the area, rescue teams continued their efforts. Boulder County doubled the number of rescuers Saturday to around 800, authorities said.

"There might be further loss of life," Boulder County sheriff Joe Pelle said in a news conference. "It's certainly a high probability...With an army of folks and an air show we're hoping to reach everyone as soon as possible."

Seven helicopters continued rescue trips in Larimer County, evacuating 1,200 people stranded in Pinewood Springs between Lyons and Estes Park along U.S. 36, and 100 people in Big Elk Meadow off Larimer County Road 47, the Boulder Daily-Camera reported.

By the end of the day, 15 helicopters were in service to reach stranded residents in remote parts of Boulder County, including many who weren't able to contact relatives because phone service was down.

"We're very much concentrating today on life-safety issues," said Dan Dallas, incident commander of Rocky Mountain Area Incident Management Team B. "We're working to bring order to a chaotic situation."

Hundreds of people were evacuated by Saturday morning, Dallas said. Favorable flying conditions early in the day helped teams rescue many more before rains began again Saturday afternoon. Private pilots assisted by flying reconnaissance missions over the flooded areas to help spot those in need of rescue.

Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead activated five Wyoming National Guard helicopters to assist evacuation efforts Saturday afternoon.

Larimer county sheriff's spokesman Nick Christensen said the rescue efforts focus on "people first, then structures.

"The recovery will take months."

Some people in mandatory evacuation areas, including Jamestown, decided not to leave their homes, Pelle said. About 50 of the 295 residents in Jamestown had declined to board helicopters as of late Friday night,

Dallas said.

It could be several days before the National Guard can send helicopters with food, drinkable water and supplies.

"We are making our best effort today to evacuate people but we might not be able to do so [Sunday]," Pelle said. "We hope that they'll come down."

Pelle predicted that despite hundreds of rescuers trying to reach people who are in remote areas, the sheriff's office will be unable to help some residents because roads are unaccessible.

"It's a sinking feeling... We are not going to be able to help them," he said.

The mountains are strewn with cabins and homes that are in some cases miles away from any community, Pelle said. Rescuers are using ATVs and are hiking in to dozens of homes doing welfare checks.


Just because authorities haven't heard from people listed as unaccounted for doesn't mean that they were killed or injured, he said. It may be they were unable to get out of the mountains on their own and do not have phone service.

"We don't know what we don't know. Part of the challenge is getting to all those people," Pelle said. "I'm assuming we're going to make a very large dent in reducing the list of people who are unaccounted for."

Forecasters expect rain in the area, heavy at times, to continue through Sunday.

"Our normal has changed for a while," Pelle said.

Road closures continued across the area. At a press conference Saturday, Gov. John Hickenlooper said several assessment teams are looking at bridges and roads.

Hickenlooper said he reached out to Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin on Saturday for insight on transportation infrastructure. Vermont, hit by catastrophic Hurricane Irene in 2011, is the "model of best practices" for Colorado, he said. On Monday, the state will send two people from the task force that headed Vermont's relief to Colorado.

He said he expected a full assessment damage to roads and bridges by Tuesday.

As floodwaters overwhelmed municipal sanitation plants, officials imposed ever-increasing limitations on water use.

One pregnant woman was flown out of Lyons on a helicopter Friday, Pelle said.

"Her water broke last night," he said. "There are some personal stories that make all this worth it."

A group of Louisville fifth graders who were sheltered at the Cal-Wood Education Center outside of Jamestown were taken by helicopter to the Boulder airport Saturday.

In Evans, where the First Avenue treatment plant was out of service, authorities asked residents to stop flushing toilets, doing laundry, taking baths or showers and washing dishes indefinitely. The city is distributing portable toilet facilities around town.

Longmont officials asked homeowners to stop watering their lawns.

Residents of the close-knit community of Jamestown have opened up their homes and refrigerators to neighbors in need.

"My truck is high and dry behind my house by my buddy's trailer has half tank of gas if you can siphon it out," wrote one Jamestown resident on an online community bulletin board after he was evacuated Saturday. His message applied to anyone left in town.

"Keys are under the driver's side mat if you need to move it or use it," he added. "My dirt bikes are up there ...My house door is locked but shouldn't be too hard to get in if absolutely necessary. Hang in there Jimtown, we'll be back." - Denver Post.



Town Of Milliken Nearly An Island Due To Flooding
The newest areas to be inundated by flooding are east in Weld County.  People won’t be traveling along Highway 267 in Milliken anytime soon. The town is nearly surrounded by the water.

The flood water washed away part of Highway 267, severing it in half. The road keeps giving away more and more. People’s lives and their livelihood are now put on hold until the water can recede. Jorge Garza and his family were evacuated Friday morning.

“The fire department said Milliken is an island but I found a way out,” Garza said. When Copter4 flew over the small town it spotted a family of three and their dog being rescued from the rising water. A motorized raft carried them to land where they were met by rescue crews.

The farm town has turned into a lake with campers, fields and cars submerged. Roads throughout Weld County are closed forcing people to zigzag around in their cars with ultimately no route home. Gina Rodriguez thought she took a safe road back to Longmont but ended up in waist high water.

“All of a sudden I hit the water and then I stopped. My car stalled and I couldn’t move anymore,” Rodriguez said. It took firemen 30 minutes to pull her from her submerged car.

“I almost fell a couple of times just with the current. It was just scary. It didn’t seem real,” she said. Garza is thankful he and his loved ones found a way out of the small town that now looks like an island.
